The BBC’s tests of the recently approved DVB-T2 transmission standard in Guildford are so far running smoothly. Nick Wells, acting head, Future Media Research, BBC Research & Innovation, told New Television Insider there had been no problems in getting the signals on the air and maintaining the transmissions. Sky holds onto £10 HD fee

Sky CEO Jeremy Darroch has said the broadcaster has no intention of removing the £10 (€12.7) fee paid by HD subscribers to gain access to the channels within its HD Mix. Unlike Scandinavia’s Canal Digital and the Belgian IPTV network Belgacom, Sky is easing the burden on new subscribers by reducing the costs of the hardware. Read the Story »
Consumers luke warm to new technologies

Last week, two interesting news items caught my eye. Number one: the German mobile TV operator Mobile 3.0 is set to abandon the market for mobile television even before it has began full operations. Number two: US consumers are wary of the new Blu-ray disks. The two items seem to indicate that in these uncertain economic times, consumers are not willing to buy just any new technical development just because it is technically possible. Read the Story »
Microsoft ready for Presentation Framework

Operators working with the Microsoft Presentation Framework are expected to have the first applications ready as soon as next spring. This follows the May beta release of the software that is designed to allow operators to offer their own IPTV-based services applications either directly or through third parties.
Stephen Pethera , Microsoft Mediaroom, senior media services manager – EMEA & APac, told New Television Insider that the first deployments using the Framework are likely to take place between Q1 and Q2 next year. Read the Story »
